One is the natural<strong> drainage<\/strong> of <strong>water<\/strong> from the soil due to a <strong>hydraulic gradient<\/strong>. This is called <strong>self-weight consolidation<\/strong>. The other is the application of a <strong>load<\/strong> that immediately increases the <strong>porewater pressure<\/strong> above its current value. This is called <strong>excess porewater pressure<\/strong>.
