In a bolted joint based on the plastic theory the end bolts are assumed to be stressed to their yield point. As the total load on the connection be increased, the end bolts will deform without resisting additional load, the next bolts in the line will have their stresses increased until they too are at the yield point, and so forth. Plastic analysis justify the assumption of rigid plates and equal bolt stresses.
