In a static or steady-state problem without substitution of a minimum number of prescribed displacements to prevent rigid body movements of the structure, it is impossible to solve this system, because the displacements can not be uniquely determined by the forces in such a situation. This physically obvious fact will be interpreted mathematically as the stiffness matrix being singular, i.e., not possessing an inverse.
