If the body has no abrupt changes in geometry, material properties and external conditions (e.g., load), the body can be divided into equal subdivisions and hence the spacing of the nodes can be uniform. On the other hand, if there are any discontinuities in the problem, nodes have to be introduced at these discontinuities.
