When flexible structures are subjected to lateral forces, the resulting horizontal displacements lead to additional overturning moments because the gravity load is also displaced. Therefore, in addition to the overturning moment produced by lateral forces, the secondary moment due to gravity load must also be resisted. This moment increment in turn will produce additional lateral displacement.
