Local buckling may be avoided by reducing the stress capacity of the section, and hence its bending moment capacity, if the slenderness of the web or the flange exceeds certain limits. For this purpose sections are divided into four classes, with Class 1 being susceptible to local buckling and Class 4 most susceptible.
