For dry, granular, noncohesive materials, the assumed linear pressure diagram is fairly satisfactory; cohesive soils or saturated sands behave in a different, nonlinear manner. Therefore, it is very common to use granular materials as a backfill to provide an approximately linear pressure diagram.
