In the splitting test, a cylinder is loaded in compression on two diametrically opposite pads. The concrete is in a biaxial (compression-tension) state of stress and tensile failure occurs on the plane between the loaded pads. The splitting test gives a strength which is closer to the true tensile strength of concrete than the modulus of rupture.
