A strength gain is possible with plates in shear where tension field action is considered. Thin unstiffened plates cannot carry much load after buckling. The critical buckling stress is increased if stiffeners are added. However, the stiffened plate can carry more loads after buckling in the diagonal tension field. The flanges, stiffeners and tension field now act like a truss.
