Where rigid beam-to-column connections are used, some kind of column stiffening is normally required. Horizontal stiffeners are used where the column web is overstressed by the concentrated load from the beam flanges. There is often a high shear in the column over the depth of the beam and where this exceeds the shear capacity of the column web, stiffening is required.
